I was exploring the art, trying to name what makes a Tehran painting feel both ancient and completely now. The answer was a word that means nothing.
I spent weeks in the galleries trying to name the thing that makes the best work here feel both very old and very new at once. It kept leading me back to one movement, and one word.
In the 1960s a group of artists — the Saqqakhaneh school — took the motifs of folk shrines and street religion and made them modern: calligraphy turned to abstraction, the everyday made luminous. Parviz Tanavoli spent a career sculpting a single word, heech — 'nothing' — until nothing became the most eloquent thing in the room.

Then there is Monir Farmanfarmaian, who cut mirror into mosaic the way the old shrines do, and built infinity out of broken glass. Order from fragments. I stood in front of her work and thought about a knotted rug — the same patience, the same geometry, a different material.
That is what we look for now in the contemporary half of the house: work that carries a thousand years lightly, and still feels like it was made this morning.
