A termeh is not a fabric so much as a record of attention. The Khatib family has worked these looms for three generations, and the patterns — boteh, the paisley that began as a cypress bent in the wind — are held in memory, not on paper.

What struck me was the quiet. No machinery, only the soft clack of the comb and the occasional word passed between father and son. The silk arrives undyed and leaves the colour of pomegranate and saffron.
When a piece is finished it is folded once, wrapped in muslin, and set aside. It will travel across a customs hall and arrive in a home that may never know Yazd exists. Our job is to make sure it travels with its story intact.
